Immigrant-service Agencies

Compass.jpgImmigrant-service agencies ("settlement agencies") provide community and social programs for immigrants and refugees in Ontario. These agencies provide a wide range of programs and services which help immigrants adapt to life in Ontario. Many agencies offer specialized programs for women, refugees, seniors and young people.

Typical Services

Immigrant-service agencies often provide the following services (and more):

  • Advocacy, community development and social action
  • Language and orientation classes
  • Individual, family and vocational counselling
  • Interpretation and translation
  • Information and referral
  • Job training
  • Legal assistance
  • Health services

Immigrant-service agencies are located across Ontario in major cities, towns and small communities from Thunder Bay to Welland, and from Windsor to Ottawa.

In Ontario settlement agencies are traditionally funded by governments and foundations including:

  • Citizenship and Immigration Canada (Federal)
  • Province of Ontario
  • Municipalities
  • United Way

There is no definitive list of "settlement agencies" as many community organizations deliver services that could be considered "settlement"-related and many typical settlement agencies provide services that are not immigration-related.
